Mr. Hanyu is an artist who creates households goods with metallic materials, and since I met him at his booth in the Matsumoto Craft Fair in 2014, he became an essential being for craftsmanship in the Kumonodaira Mountain Hut. His works engender a unique atmosphere that is pleasantly comprised of natural outlook, essence of traditional crafts and geometric industrial design, etc. They are never “stylish pieces” that precede a fairy-tale-like image, but high-quality pieces with universal functionality and beauty. Mr. Hanyu and I enjoy collaborative work as I draw up a draft of a furniture whose design is a mix of wooden and metallic parts (LP player rack, dining table, handrail on the staircase, etc) and Mr. Hanyu builds them by adding his arrangement, for a piece or two of furniture every year.
