In the dawn of modern mountaineering, Kumonodaira Plateau was called the “Last Undiscovered Region” as it is located in such a remote region from the haunts of men. Kumonodaira, is a large plateau at the altitude of 2,600m (8,530 ft) in the deepest region of the Northern Japan Alps; that is isolated from city lights. Once we step into this tranquil plateau, we will witness intriguing sights with our own eyes. As we step further, we will see a visual scene rolling out which resembles a Japanese Garden, that is as if someone has arranged it in orderly fashion. Small ponds in various shapes scattered out in soft undulating grassland, rhythmically placed volcanic rocks, Haimatsu (Dwarf pine) showing its bluish black blanches and leaves from behind rocks. And under the vast sky, famous mountains at the heart of the Alps surrounds the “Gardens in Heaven” as if competing each other and echoes the sound of streams from deep ravines of the Kurobe Riverhead. Without noticing, we are drawn into a world that is part of a primeval tale.
The mountain hut has evolved to be a mediator between human beings and nature amid the harsh alpine environment which at times refuses us human beings. Camping gears have evolved greatly through the years and they have increasingly become the first choice for those preferring freedom and privacy, we the mountain hut are aiming to create a sense of “Value of Time” that can only be experienced by staying at the mountain hut. Rather than to be a mere “Place of Accommodation” where people arrive, sleep and head out, we would like to be the place where people can face nature with more richness and creativity while maintaining modest sensitivity of their daily life.
